Scouting San Francisco:
San Francisco is mostly an unknown. They are an extremely young club that features one players with more than one year of major college basketball experience. In their exhibition game against Menlo College the Dons played 0 seniors, 1 junior, 2 sophomores and 9 freshmen. They started 3 freshmen, 1 sophomores and 1 junior. Former Kansas great and NBA journeyman Rex Walters enters his third year as the head man on Hilltop and he has completely turned over the roster. He took over a team in chaos after the firing of Jessie Evans and the term of Eddie Sutton as interim head coach. The Dons finished 12-18 last year and 11-19 the year before that. The Dons are picked to finish 6th in the 8 team WCC.
The Ones to Watch:
Angelo Caloiaro- 6’8 225 SO F- 8.9 ppg 3.7 rbds
The leading returning scorer from last season is a major threat from the outside. The only returning starter from a year ago knocked down an impressive 49% of his 3’s (55-112) which was best in school history. He will look to take the scoring load this season.
Dominique O’Connor- 5’10 165 RS-FR G- — ppg — rbds
The Freshman was slated to be the starting point guard last year before a knee injury ended his season prematurely. His debut will be much anticipated for the home crowd.
Keys to the Game:
1- Defensive Pressure- The Dons are extremely young in the backcourt and the SU defense was suffocating at times against Maryland in their last game. The same intensity will be tough for a young USF squad to handle.
2- Knock down some J’s- SU will be a better shooting team this season, but they did not show it in game one.
3- Feed Alex Jones- The Dons are not big and the matchup should work to the favor of Jones. He was the Player of the Game for SU in game 1.
Numbers to Know:
– This will be the 26th meeting between the two teams, but they have not met in 30 years.
-Seattle U leads the nation in steals with 18 a game.
SU faces an old WCC rival tonight as they look to snap an 8 game losing streak against the Dons. Tune in 15 minutes before tip on 710 ESPN Seattle and the live blog will be cooking at seattleufan.com.
