Seahawks general manager John Schneider said Sunday that running back Thomas Rawls will be about another month with his fibula injury.

Schneider gave that update during his weekly pregame interview on the Seahawks’ radio broadcast on 710 ESPN Seattle. It was in response to a question about newcomer C.J. Spiller, whom the Seahawks signed earlier this week to bolster a backfield that is banged up with Rawls out and C.J. Prosise dealing with a hand injury that has kept him out of the last three games, including Sunday’s against the Jets at MetLife Stadium.

Rawls was injured in the Seahawks’ loss to the Rams in Week 2. Coach Pete Carroll initially said Rawls was dealing with a muscle strain around his shin but then said last week that further evaluation revealed a crack in his fibula that will keep him out a few weeks. Schneider gave an updated time frame Sunday, saying Rawls will be out “another month, or approximately about a month.”

The Seahawks have a bye next week. Their next four games after that are vs. Atlanta in Week 6, at Arizona in Week 7, at New Orleans in Week 8 and vs. Buffalo in Week 8.

Schneider said the Seahawks had been in contact with Spiller’s agent once he was released by the Saints earlier this month.

“I’ve talked to you guys before about how we’re always in every deal, so when he was released, we called, talked to his agent. He was going to go to Green Bay and then New York,” Schneider said, referring to Spiller’s free-agent visits with the Packers and Jets. “He committed to those teams first and then he was going to come visit us. For one reason or another, he did not sign with those teams. So we were able to talk to him on Tuesday night and get him in on Wednesday, got him physicalled, he met with the staff and everything and we just decided to just go for it instead of waiting until Monday or tomorrow.

“We just did it and he had a great attitude this week. He’s a pro. We’re excited to see what he does today.”

Schneider called Spiller a “legitimate third-down back.”

“We drafted C.J. Prosise to do that,” Schneider said. “He hasn’t been able to stay healthy, so we’re still trying to get him into that role. But C.J. Spiller is also a guy that’s carried the ball a bunch. So we just feel like once we get Prosise back too and then Thomas is going to be out another month, or approximately about a month, so we’re just excited to get those guys all in the mix.”
