The Cougs scrimmaged for the first time on Wednesday and although the coaching staff gave most of the snaps to the 2nd and 3rd -stringers, the #1’s looked impressive on both sides on the ball in limited action.
Here’s the release from the school:
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University held its first live scrimmage of fall camp Wednesday afternoon, working through 55 plays inside Martin Stadium. The No. 1 offense made the most of its only series together, scoring on a 20-yard touchdown pass to tight end Andrei Lintz form Jeff Tuel to cap a 70-yard seven play drive.
The No. 1 defense played a couple series and looked impressive, receiving a sack from defensive end Travis Long, a big hit from linebacker C.J. Mizell and holding the No. 2 offense to a pair field goal attempts.
Most of the scrimmage was focused around the No. 2 and No. 3 offenses and defenses, providing coach Paul Wulff and his staff a chance to evaluate the younger players during live action.
Running back Carl Winston led the way with seven carries for 22 yards while freshmen Marcus Mason added 19 yards on three carries. Tuel completed two of his three pass attempts for 56 yards while redshirt-freshman Connor Halliday finished 5-of-7 for 96 yards. Wide receiver Kristoff Williams had a pair of catches for 46 yards, including a 42 yarder from Halliday. Tuel connected with Isiah Barton for 36 yards before hitting Lintz for the only score of the day.
Junior wideout Gino Simone made a pair of nice catches, weaving his way through a couple tacklers to pick up another five yards after his first catch. Freshman receivers Henry Eaddy and Dominique Williams each had two catches for 23 and 22 yards, respectively.
The defense only allowed the one touchdown on the opening drive, blocked a pair of field goal attempts and received sacks from Long, Chas Sampson, David Davis and Steven Hoffart.
Kicker Andrew Furney connected on field goals of 41 and 47 yards.
The Cougars continue fall camp with a pair of practices tomorrow, working out at 8:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m
