Leach hires a DC…and basketball loses to Colorado

Jan 9, 2012, 2:30 PM

Mike Leach continues to round out his staff with his most important hire of all – Defensive Coordinator. Over the past few months, there have been quite a few big names bandied about, but it appears that Leach has gone an unconventional route and hired former Montana DC and Assistant Head Coach Mike Breske.

If you’ve heard of Breske, you’re likely a fan of Montana, Wyoming, or Northern Colorado. Outside of that, few know his name.

What we do know about this guy is that his defenses at those smaller schools have all been very good – and very aggressive. The blitz-happy Breske defenses have helped his teams win three national championships, two with Northern Colorado and one with Montana. His ’06 Wyoming defense was ranked #9 in the nation.

Breske is believed to be the final member of the coaching staff to be hired and the whole staff will be officially announced later this week.

For any Cougs who wonder why Leach went for a guy who no one’s ever heard of, don’t worry. Trust in Leach. He knows more about football than you do. You can spend a lot for a big name DC and watch it flame out horribly (looking at you, UW!) or you can hire the right guy. It remains to be seen if Leach hired the right guy, but I have to assume that Leach has a plan…

In basketball, the Cougs dropped another one, this time to Colorado 71-60. I don’t really want to talk about it.

The 9-7 (1-3) Cougs will take the week to prepare for a road game against the huskies (9-6, 3-1) on Sunday at 4pm. Finally, a break for the Cougs.

Go Cougs!
