Washington State cornerback Damante Horton, who twice picked off USC quarterbacks to key the Cougars to a 10-7 upset win Saturday, has been recognized as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week.

Horton, a 5-10 senior from Oakland, Calif., had a career day with two interceptions and four tackles against the Trojans.

He turned a pick of a Cody Kessler pass into a 70-yard touchdown return to tie the game at 7-7 late in the first half, then preserved the Cougars’ victory with less than a minute to go when he intercepted Max Wittek. He was also part of a Washington State secondary that held USC’s All-American receiver, Marquis Lee, to just 27 yards on seven catches.

Horton added a career-high two tackles-for-loss (for a combined 12 yards) as part of his four tackles.

The award is the first weekly accolade of the college career for Horton, who entered the game with just one career interception.

The Cougars (1-1) continue play when they host Southern Utah at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
