One of the stars of the 2023 NBA All-Star weekend was, of all people, Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf. And if you were surprised to see him dominating on the court in the annual Celebrity Game last Friday, well, you’re not alone.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider was also surprised to find out Metcalf was playing in Salt Lake City, though his reaction was probably pretty different from those of Hawks fans.

“I didn’t know if it was real at first,” Schneider said Thursday during his weekly show on Seattle Sports. “We had just got done with meetings and we went across the street to grab a beer before we went back to the hotel room and yeah, I saw him running around. I was like, ‘Holy smokes.’ He was doing great but I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, is that real?’ I think I was the last person to know about it.”

Luckily for Schneider and the Seahawks, Metcalf didn’t hurt himself in his MVP-winning performance that featured several slam dunks. Was Schneider concerned about a freak injury when he found out about Metcalf playing in the game, though?

“Very much so. … He took off a couple of times and I’m just thinking to myself, ‘Holy cow.’ Like, ‘I gotta get home and go to bed.'”

Schneider at least had some fun with the 6-foot-4, 236-pound Metcalf after seeing him play hoops with and against celebrities like pop superstar Janelle Monae, WWE’s The Miz, and Guillermo from Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“I just sent him a text, I was like, ‘Hey, great job in the game but you were dunking on people like my height and stuff.’ He’s out there blocking some actor’s shot that’s like 5 foot 4,” Schneider joked.

The John Schneider Show airs live at 4 p.m. every Thursday on Seattle Sports leading up to (and including) Day 1 of the 2023 NFL Draft on April 27. You can listen to this week’s edition, which included insight on some Seahawks signings from this week, the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine and more, in the podcast at this link or in the player below.
