About the 88th Annual Sports Star of the Year Awards:
Created by legendary sports editor, Royal Brougham, and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in 1936, the Sports Star of the Year Awards Show (SSY) has celebrated the achievements of Washington sports for nine decades.
Featuring a pre-show reception and live awards show, SSY has historically filled the ballrooms of Seattle’s finest hotels and theaters. Showcasing the athletes, coaches, and community members behind the most memorable sports stories, SSY is Washington’s biggest night out for sports. Previous winners and special guests include Sue Bird, Gary Payton, Steve Largent, Doris Brown Heritage, Ken Griffey Jr., Apolo Ohno, Paul G. Allen, Kelsey Plum, Stefan Frei and more.
For the first time, the Seattle Sports Commission will welcome the Pacific Northwest Football Hall of Fame to its show. Since 1990, the Pacific Northwest Football Hall of Fame has recognized our region’s long history of players, coaches, broadcasters, officials, and influential figures.
Top Seattle athletes will be recognized and this year the SSC is proud to announce Baseball Hall of Famer and Seattle Mariners legend Ken Griffey Jr. as the recipient of the 2023 Royal Brougham Sports Legend Award. He will accept the honor at the show which will take place February 28th at the Westin Seattle.
“I’m honored to accept the Royal Brougham Sports Legend Award and join this roster of incredibly influential figures in Washington sports,” Griffey Jr. said. “Seattle is a very special place to my family and me, and I look forward to celebrating with and recognizing the accomplishments of fellow award winners, nominees, and the sports community.”
Other awards include the Paul G. Allen Humanitarian Award, Wayne Gittinger Inspirational Youth Award, Keith Jackson Media Excellence Award, Equity and Inclusion Award, and the Leader of the Year.
