Bump’s Seahawks Breakdown: Veteran free agents Seattle should consider
Jul 21, 2022, 4:19 PM
Training camp is just a week away for the Seahawks and while the roster appears fairly set, there’s always an opportunity to add more.
While Seattle could make a move for another quarterback like Jimmy Garoppolo, the team could also look to the free agent market to boost the roster in other ways.
For former NFL receiver Michael Bumpus, who hosts Bump and Stacy on Seattle Sports 710 AM, he thinks the Hawks can add to the trenches with two veteran free agents as he explained in his latest video breakdown for the Seattle Sports YouTube page.
First, Bumpus thinks the Seahawks could reunite with Carlos Dunlap, a 33-year-old edge rusher who led the team in sacks last year with 8.5 and who had five sacks in just eight games for Seattle in 2020.
In 2021, the Seahawks played a 4-3 defense and Dunlap often dropped into coverage, which isn’t a strength of his, Bumpus said. Now, the Seahawks are changing defensive philosophies under new defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt, who was Dunlap’s defensive line coach the last two years.
Bumpus’ next pick is offensive tackle Riley Reiff.
Reiff, 33, was with the Cincinnati Bengals last year and started 12 games for them during their Super Bowl run. BEcause he’s a veteran and can play both tackle spots, Bumpus thinks he would be a good fit for the Seahawks because their two expected starters at those positions are rookies in first-round pick Charles Cross at the left spot and third-round pick Abraham Lucas at right tackle.
“Those guys would be great additions not just to the roster, but to the locker room,” Bumpus said. “They’re guys who have been there and done that.”
