Now that the Seahawks have moved on from quarterback Russell Wilson and linebacker Bobby Wagner, two perennial Pro Bowlers, there’s only one player on their roster who is instantly recognizable to football fans: wide receiver DK Metcalf.
Bumpus: Why Drew Lock could have high ceiling as Seahawks QB
“He is the one remaining true superstar right now that is on your team, and a guy who’s a clear difference maker, a playmaker,” Jake Heaps of Seattle Sports’ Jake and Stacy said Monday.
With the Seahawks in a period of transition, though, and the market for star receivers seemingly as high as it has ever been, the 24-year-old Metcalf could be an incredibly valuable trade chip for Seattle. As Heaps said last week, if he had to make a prediction, he thinks Metcalf will be traded before the 2022 season. But that’s something he thinks will be less likely after the NFL Draft, which is set for April 28-30.
What that means, though, is the next month of the NFL news cycle is going to be a tough one for Seahawks fans.
“Strap up and buckle in because the DK Metcalf rumors are going to be strong over the next month,” said Heaps, a former Seahawks quarterback, during the daily Four-Down Territory segment. “I mean, there are teams that are going to be aggressively offering trades and enticing trades to the Seattle Seahawks, especially as we get closer to the draft.”
For Seahawks fans hoping the team not only keeps Metcalf but signs him to a long-term extension (he’s entering the last year of his rookie contract), it may be a good idea to start a countdown on the calendar.
“Once we get past the draft, you can breathe a sigh of relief and feel good that DK Metcalf is gonna be a Seattle Seahawk (and) that they will work towards an extension together before training camp,” Heaps said. “… That’s why this month is going to be very nerve-racking for a lot of Seahawks fans who love DK Metcalf.”
The Seahawks under general manager John Schneider and Pete Carroll have been known to explore every option available to them, and it’s possible an offer they can’t refuse will come across their table – especially after Green Bay and Kansas City both cashed in on huge trade hauls for receivers Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill, respectively.
“They’re going to get a lot of offers,” Heaps said of the Seahawks in regards to Metcalf, “and I’ve heard conflicting reports about the organization giving assurances to DK Metcalf, and also at the same time being very open and having these discussions about (a) DK Metcalf trade and the trade value of what they could get back in return. So this next month, man, hold on. Hold on tight.”
Four-Down Territory airs at 11:15 a.m. Monday through Friday during each edition of Jake and Stacy on Seattle Sports 710 AM.
