Hot on the heels of the Nicolas Lodeiro addition, the Sounders have announced their second signing of the window: Uruguayan midfielder Alvaro “Flaco” Fernandez. A good friend of Lodeiro’s, Fernandez played for the Sounders from 2010-12 and was a big influence on Lodeiro’s decision to join Seattle.
Fernandez, an established Uruguay international, joins from Gimnasia in Argentina after stints at Chicago Fire, Al Rayyan in Qatar, and Nacional in Argentina. The player was clearly signed as a complement to the DP signing of Lodeiro, and the club expects him to be ready to play as soon as his Visa and International Transfer Certificate are accepted.
