Kigab leads Boise St. over San Diego St. on late foul shots

Feb 22, 2022, 6:51 AM | Updated: 9:00 pm

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Abu Kigab scored 21 points, including a pair of foul shots with a second left, to lift Boise State to a 58-57 win over San Diego State on Tuesday night.

Kigab, a 67% free-throw shooter this season, hit 9 of 11.

Naje Smith had 13 points, three steals and two blocks for Boise State (22-6, 13-2 Mountain West Conference). Marcus Shaver Jr. added 12 points and seven rebounds. Tyson Degenhart had seven rebounds.

Nathan Mensah had 13 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Aztecs (17-7, 9-4), whose five-game winning streak was snapped.

Matt Bradley converted a three-point play and about a minute later found Chad Baker-Mazara for a corner 3 that gave San Diego State its first lead since midway through the first half at 55-53 with 1:04 to play. Emmanuel Akot answered with a 3-pointer but Bradley quickly connected with Mensah for an alley-oop dunk to give the Aztecs a one-point lead with 24 seconds left. Shaver air balled a 3 that Bradley secured and then was fouled but missed both free throws with 7.7 seconds to go. Mladen Armus grabbed the rebound and hit Kigab who rushed up court and was tripped near the right elbow and made both foul shots to cap the scoring with 1.7 seconds remaining.

Akot made 1 of 7 from the field and finished with four points.

Bradley — a career 82.7% free-throw shooter — added 12 points and six rebounds.

Boise State, which beat San Diego State 42-37 on Jan. 22., swept the season series with the Aztecs. The Broncos lead the Mountain West, a game ahead of Wyoming and three games up on fourth-place SDSU — which trails Colorado State by a game.
