It turns out the illness that has kept Mariners shortstop Ketel Marte sidelined for the last three days is more than just the flu.
Marte has been diagnosed with “some form of mono,” manager Scott Servais said before Friday’s game in Toronto, and the 22 year old is headed for the 15-day disabled list. That leaves the Mariners short a player for the start of their series with the Blue Jays, though Servais indicated a pitcher was headed to join the team from the minors by Saturday.
This will be the second DL stint of the year for Marte, who was down for a period in late May/early June with a sprained thumb. It has yet to be determined how long Marte will be out, Servais said.
Marte didn’t travel with the Mariners to Toronto after their homestand, and Seattle made a precautionary move at shortstop by recalling infielder Luis Sardinas to take the empty roster spot created by the Mike Montgomery trade two days earlier. Sardinas will share time at short with utility man Shawn O’Malley.
Seattle has dealt with its fair share of injuries this year, and just when it appeared the M’s were closing in on getting back to 100 percent, illness has now been added to the equation.
“Big picture, from my own viewpoint I finally felt like we were starting to get the gang all back together again, but unfortunately he’s going to be down for a little bit,” Servais said.
Notes
• Wade Miley has been named the starter for Sunday’s game. Following an off-day Monday, Felix Hernandez is tentatively set to start Tuesday, followed by James Paxton on Wednesday. That means the Mariners are sticking original plan of Wade LeBlanc working out of the bullpen in the short-term is still a go even after the Montgomery trade.
• All went well for Taijuan Walker (right foot tendinitis) in a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday.
• Nick Vincent (mid back strain) is nearing his return to throwing. Servais said he will need an outing or two in the minors before rejoining Seattle’s bullpen.
