Star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was officially released by the Cleveland Browns on Monday and now all eyes are on the Seahawks.

Clayton: Seahawks in for huge week with Wilson back, OBJ a possibility

Per Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, the 29-year-old receiver wants to clear waivers and then land with Seattle to play with Russell Wilson, who is returning to action this week against the Green Bay Packers after missing the Seahawks’ last three games.

With reports surfacing that the Seahawks, who are 11th in the waiver order, are the team to watch in terms of claiming or signing Beckham, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was asked about the possibility of adding Beckham during a Monday press conference.

“You’ll have to wait and see how this all goes,” Carroll said with a smile. “As you would think, we’re aware of what’s going on and we’ve been involved to understand it and competing to know what’s happening. And we’ll let you know how it all happens.”

Carroll later called Beckham “special” and said that you’re always looking for players like that.

If it were former NFL quarterback and current FOX Sports analyst Brock Huard’s decision, the Seahawks would not be adding Beckham to the roster.

“I just don’t think that that’s the answer,” Huard told Mike Salk during their daily chat on 710 ESPN Seattle’s Mike Salk Show. “I don’t frankly want that in the room either with (receivers Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf). I think you’ve got what you need in those two guys.”

Huard doesn’t think that Beckham brings anything to the Seahawks that they don’t currently have.

“Is OBJ going to come in and run jet sweeps? Is he going to come in and block? Is he going to come in and do whatever it takes? Has he been so humbled now that he’s been out of New York and it didn’t work out in Cleveland?” Huard asked. ” … You know what he wants? He wants his touches.”

“They want a wide receiver to do all the things you just mentioned,” Salk later said.

“And they drafted him and he’s going to be back here, the second-rounder Dee Eskridge, right?” Huard responded. “Don’t you have him? Don’t you have him back? Isn’t he cleared to go? Don’t you want to see what you’ve got in your second-round pick?”

Eskridge, Seattle’s rookie receiver, hasn’t played since Week 1 due to a concussion but was designated to return from injured reserve on Monday.

Huard questions if Beckham will do the little things the Seahawks would likely ask of him as a third receiver.

“Is OBJ even going to do those things or does he just want, ‘Hey man, throw it to me. Russell, you’re the best deep-ball thrower in the game. I’m one of the best deep-ball receivers in the game,'” Huard said. “Know who else is? Tyler Lockett. Know who else is? DK Metcalf.”

Huard thinks that if the Seahawks add Beckham just to make Wilson happy, then the team would be making a big mistake.

“‘Oh, but we’ve got to appease Russell Wilson. We’ve got to do whatever we can for Russell Wilson. We’ve got to make sure we take care of Russell Wilson and keep Russell Wilson happy,'” he said. “That’s the reason you make the move? Does that make any football sense? Does it make any football sense to add him to that room with DK and Tyler?”

“Tell me one thing OBJ brings that DK Metcalf or Tyler Lockett does not have,” Huard later added. “It’s a redundancy in skillset with a guy who’s going to want his, who has shown in two locker rooms that he is about who? Is it the name on the front (of the jersey) or is he about the three letters on the back? No thank you.”
