Webb, Yastrzemski, Duggar power Giants past Rockies 12-3

DENVER (AP) — Logan Webb pitched effectively for seven innings, Mike Yastrzemski homered and Steve Duggar had two triples among his three hits as the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 12-3 Tuesday night.

Brandon Crawford added three hits and an RBI. All of Duggar’s hits went for extra bases and he drove in three runs. Yastrzemski added a run-scoring single in the ninth, finishing with three RBIs and helping San Francisco to its fifth win in six games.

C.J. Cron had an RBI double for Colorado. Pinch-hitter Joshua Fuentes and Rio Ruiz added RBI singles.

Webb (9-3) allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out six, just missing on extending his string of 14 consecutive starts in which he had allowed two or fewer runs. He helped himself with an RBI double in the second inning.

“I was trying to stay away from the big inning and really not walk anybody,” Webb said. “Because when you start walking these guys and give them free bases, that’s when you get in trouble. Luckily, I was able to execute that. I kind of went with the game plan and it worked out.”

Colorado got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on Cron’s run-scoring double. The Giants countered with three runs in the top of the fifth on Duggar’s bases-loaded triple. Evan Longoria had a run-scoring fielder’s choice ahead of Yastrzemski’s homer off Julian Fernandez.

The homer was Yastrzemski’s 22nd of the season, marking a career best and a team high for the Giants, who have an NL-leading 207 home runs this season. The homer total is the highest since the Giants hit a franchise-record 235 homers in 2001.

The Giants hit Rockies starter Chi Chi Gonzalez (3-7) hard from the outset, tagging him for five runs on eight hits before being lifted in favor of Ashton Goudeau with one out in the second.

“I think Chi Chi had a hard time getting the ball down,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “He couldn’t get the ball at the knees or below. When Chi Chi’s good, that ball is down and produces a lot of grounders. Today, he just couldn’t get the ball where he needed to and the Giants took advantage. When they got a good pitch to hit, they smoked it.”

The first three batters Gonzalez faced, Tommy La Stella, Brandon Belt and Buster Posey doubled, and Crawford added a one-out RBI single to put the Giants up 3-0. Webb doubled following Duggar’s first triple in the second, and La Stella’s RBI single gave the Giants a 5-0 lead.

“It’s a big yard here,” Duggar said. “I was able to get a couple of pitches over the heart tonight. I was on them. I was able to split the gaps and run a little bit.”

Rookie right-hander Kervin Castro pitched two scoreless innings for the Giants, finishing up for Webb, in his major league debut.

Giants: LHP Alex Wood is making progress in his recovery from COVID-19. Though there is still no timetable for his return — Wood has been sidelined since testing positive Aug. 30 — manager Gabe Kapler said Tuesday that if his recovery remains on course, he could throw off a mound this weekend. “He’s turned the corner,” Kapler said. “He is feeling better. The chills are gone. He said he’s just feeling a little listless, there’s not a lot of energy there.”

Giants: RHP Anthony DeSclafani (11-6, 3.24 ERA) will be looking to build off a terrific outing last time out when he starts Wednesday against the Rockies. DeSclafani pitched six shutout innings in the Giants’ 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers last time out.

Rockies: RHP Jon Gray (7-10, 4.13 ERA) is expected to be reinstated from the 10-day injury list and start Wednesday’s series finale against the Giants. Gray has been sidelined since coming out of an Aug. 29 start against the Los Angeles Dodgers early due to right forearm tightness.
