Mitch Haniger may not have received an invite to the All-Star Game last week, but that didn’t stop the Mariners right fielder from hitting like an All-Star coming out of the break.

Groz: Best way for M’s to improve before trade deadline is on their roster

The 30-year-old Haniger has been named the American League Player of the Week, as announced by MLB on Monday afternoon.

This is Haniger’s first Player of the Week award, and it covers the three days after MLB returned to play following the All-Star festivities at Coors Field in Denver.

Haniger went 5 for 11 (.455) in the Mariners three games in Anaheim over the weekend, including two home runs, a double, two walks, a hit by pitch, seven runs scored and six RBIs. He posted a .533 on-base percentage and 1.091 slugging percentage for a 1.624 OPS in Seattle’s series win.

As the Mariners prepare for a two-game set starting Tuesday at Colorado, Haniger carries a nine-game hitting streak with four home runs and a .394/.475/.788 slash line (1.263 OPS).

This is Haniger’s first season back since missing half of the 2019 campaign and all of 2020 due to multiple injuries and surgeries he endured as a result of fouling a pitch off himself. In 89 games, he has a .266/.322/.509 slash line (.831 OPS) with a team-leading 22 home runs and 58 RBIs.

Along with Haniger’s award, Milwaukee’s Willy Adames was named the National League Player of the Week.
