The Seahawks have a number of young players on the roster who appear primed and ready to take the next step forward in their NFL careers.

Clayton: Nothing to lose if Seahawks give Gordon another shot

There’s 2020 draft picks Jordyn Brooks and Alton Robinson, who shined at times as rookies and will likely have more on their plates in their second NFL seasons.

There’s defensive tackle Poona Ford, who’s been an underrated player on Seattle’s defense over the last three years but will have a larger role in 2021 following the departure of Jarran Reed.

But there’s another young player who could emerge as a key member of the 2021 Seahawks, and he’s new to Seattle. That would be tight end Gerald Everett, who comes to Seattle after spending his first four NFL seasons in Los Angeles with the Rams.

Former NFL receiver Michael Bumpus believes that “the new guy” will be the Seahawks’ breakout player in 2021. He shared why he’s excited to see Everett play in 2021 during 710 ESPN Seattle’s Danny and Gallant on Wednesday.

“I saw what he can do with the Rams with (new Seahawks offensive coordinator Shane) Waldron being the passing game coordinator (for the Rams),” Bumpus said. “He can do a little bit of everything and that’s what you ask tight ends to do. They have to block, they have to be able to catch passes and screens, you can move them outside.”

The word “versatile” was a key one when Bumpus discussed what Everett brings to the Seahawks on offense.

“He’s going to be one of the most versatile players on the field, and as a tight end, you should be one of the most versatile players on the field because of the things I said (and what the team) asks them to do,” Bumpus said. “I think (Seattle’s breakout player is) going to be Gerald Everett.”

So what exactly does “breakout” mean for Everett, who had a career-high 417 receiving yards last year?

“He’s not going to go for 1,000 yards, right? He’s not going to be the leading receiver on this team, but he is going to make some plays I feel like that we haven’t seen from the tight end position since Seattle’s favorite tight end Jimmy Graham,” Bumpus said. “… I think we’re going to see Gerald Everett kind of snowball into this thing. And I think you’re going to see him flash a few more times and be like, ‘Man, we haven’t seen that at the tight end position.'”

Everett’s presence could also help another member of Seattle’s tight end room.

“It’s going to get Will (Dissly) to blow up too because if that guy can stay healthy, man, I like that 1-2 combo at the tight end spot,” Bumpus said.
