Clayton: Not much to lose if Seahawks give Josh Gordon another chance

Could a third time be the charm for the Seahawks with wide receiver Josh Gordon?

How well will DK Metcalf fit in Seahawks’ new offense?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported late last week that Gordon has applied the NFL for reinstatement from his indefinite suspension for substance abuse. Schefter said Gordon has been tested three times a week for the past three months and has not had a positive test. It would appear – barring a setback – he should be available for the 2021 season.

While most teams won’t give players two or more chances, the Seahawks should try to get him again if he’s available. In 2019, Gordon struck up a good relationship on the field with Russell Wilson and did well as a third receiver in five games with Seattle. While the Seahawks like second-round pick D’Wayne Eskridge as a candidate for their No. 3 receiver job, Gordon is big (6 foot 3) and a former Pro Bowler. His return would make the offense deeper and better, something Wilson is looking for.

Gordon was suspended indefinitely in 2019 but the Seahawks waited him out. He was reinstated last December and was set to practice but went back on the suspended list before it could happen. He showed his desire to stay a Seahawk last season by moving to the area and living here. What we don’t know is if he still has a place in Seattle.

Gordon has continued to work on the football field. He joined the Zappers of the Fan Controlled Football League in Duluth, Ga., and played with his former Cleveland Browns teammate Johnny Manziel. They made the playoffs together.

Clearly if Gordon does come back to the NFL he’ll play at the minimum salary, so there would be little risk for the Seahawks. What do they have to lose by signing him?
