Mariners rookie Logan Gilbert dominant in 6-2 win over Cleveland

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jake Fraley homered off AL Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber after replacing the injured Mitch Haniger, rookie Logan Gilbert threw a quality start and the Seattle Mariners beat the Cleveland Indians 6-2 on Sunday.

Mariners 6, Cleveland 2: Box score

The Mariners, coming off a blown late lead and a 10-inning loss on Saturday, had to deal with more bad news two batters into the game when Haniger fouled a pitch off his left knee and had to be helped from the field.

Mariners manager Scott Servais said X-rays showed a deep bone bruise and Haniger will likely have more tests on Monday with the team back in Seattle. The injury is another setback for the Mariners, who have used a major-league high 51 players this season. Haniger leads the team in homers and RBIs.

J.P. Crawford, who singled and stole second to begin the game, had a clear view of Haniger’s at-bat.

“I just knew,” Crawford said. “It didn’t look good. I felt bad for him, but we need him. Hopefully he gets back sooner than later.”

Fraley completed the at-bat with a strikeout and flied out in the second, but his two-run homer in the fourth pushed Seattle’s lead to 5-0.

Kyle Seager hit a solo homer in the third off Bieber, who gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings.

Seattle has beaten Bieber twice this season, scoring eight runs on 15 hits in 10 1/3 innings, but Seager doesn’t believe the Mariners have figured him out.

“He’s a tough pitcher,” Seager said. “The curveball is so tight. It’s so hard. He’s that good for a reason. We had some really good at-bats. We really battled him and worked. It was a good offensive performance by us.”

Gilbert (2-2) outpitched Cleveland’s ace, allowing one run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander was removed after Harold Ramirez’s two-out single in the seventh.

Bieber (7-4) gave up 10 hits, struck out eight and walked two. He retired the side in order only once and threw 107 pitches.

“Today, I got beat for not executing,” Bieber said. “That’s obvious. Whether it’s curveball, fastball, slider, changeup, cutter, it doesn’t really matter. I just got to be better and continue to hit spots, execute throughout the game, strike one, two and three and then continue momentum.”

Bieber and Aaron Civale have had to carry the load for Cleveland’s rotation, which has been plagued by injuries and inexperience.

The Indians optioned right-hander Triston McKenzie to Triple-A Columbus before the game. Zach Plesac, who sustained a broken right thumb after angrily removing his shirt following a rough outing, is playing catch but there’s no timetable for his return.

Mariners manager Scott Servais said Saturday’s 5-4 loss — in which closer Rafael Montero couldn’t hold a 4-1 lead after retiring the first two batters in the ninth — left a sour taste in his mouth. Gilbert’s strong outing and the home runs were much sweeter.

“To go out there and shut them down like he did is exactly what we needed,” Servais said.

José Godoy and J.P. Crawford had run-scoring singles in the second for Seattle, which went 4-6 on an 11-day trip. Crawford and Seager each had three hits while Jake Bauers, acquired from Cleveland on Thursday, had two hits and an RBI.

Amed Rosario had an RBI single in the sixth for Cleveland. The Indians loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth off Kendall Graveman and scored a run on a wild pitch, but Josh Naylor lined to Fraley in left field to end the game.

Graveman was making his second appearance since being activated after a COVID-19 scare.

Haniger, who has 16 home runs and 40 RBIs, was struck squarely on the knee by the foul ball and went to the ground immediately. He slowly got to his feet and was assisted off the field by Servais and a trainer.
