RENTON – The Seahawks held their second of three minicamp practices Wednesday. Here are a few notes and observations:
• Right tackle J’Marcus Webb took part in team drills, working with the first group in what appeared to be his busiest day since sustaining a calf strain earlier in the offseason. Left tackle Garry Gilliam remained out. He missed organized team activities and the first two minicamp practices after having a cyst removed from his knee. Webb is new to the system, having signed with Seattle this offseason in free agency, and Gilliam is new to the position after moving over from right tackle. While there’s still a long way to go until the regular season begins, those players need all the work they can get, especially considering the other new pieces on Seattle’s offensive line and the time it typically takes for a unit to gel. Webb’s return is a positive development in that regard. Gilliam may not be far behind. Coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday that he’s almost ready to start practicing and that he could play in a week if it was the regular season. Bradley Sowell has been working with the starters at left tackle in Gilliam’s absence and was there again Wednesday with Mark Glowinski at left guard, Justin Britt at center and rookie first-round pick Germain Ifedi at right guard. Those four have been constants with the first group, at least in the practices that have been open to the media.

• Rookie running back C.J. Prosise also took part in team drills Wednesday, which marked another step in his return from the hip-flexor injury that had sidelined for OTAs. Carroll said Tuesday that it had been “frustrating” not having Prosise available considering how the team is counting on him to contribute as a rookie. Seattle drafted Prosise in the third round with the belief that he could step in right away as a third-down back, but Carroll acknowledged that he’ll be “up against a short time-frame” having missed so many practices already.
• Defensive end Michael Bennett was once again present but not practicing, watching from the sideline due to what he said Tuesday is an ankle injury. He chatted for several minutes with general manager John Schneider. Later in practice he gave some instruction to rookie defensive end David Perkins. Bennett said Tuesday that while he doesn’t expect to practice this week, his ankle should be fine by the time training camp begins late next month.
• Wide receivers Paul Richardson and Kenny Lawler were among the players who did not practice Tuesday because of apparent injuries. Carroll said Tuesday that Richardson had “tightened up” during practice. Lawler, a rookie seventh-round pick, sat out again. Carroll said Tuesday that Lawler is dealing with a hyperextended knee. He didn’t take part in Seattle’s final OTA last week. Cornerback Tye Smith didn’t practice Wednesday, either.
• Douglas McNeil, who is fighting for one of the final spots in Seattle’s wide receiver corps, was involved in one of the plays of the day when he hauled in a deep touchdown pass from Russell Wilson. McNeil’s catch was nice, but Wilson’s throw was better, perfectly placed even though it looked like he wasn’t able to properly set his feet. Wilson has looked as on-point as ever this offseason. Wednesday’s practice was no different.
