While Seattle Seahawks fans spent the entire first day of the NFL Draft watching other teams make picks, UW Huskies fans got in on the action just as the first round wrapped up.

O’Neil: Hawks sitting pretty while rivals deal with QB drama during draft

Joe Tryon, an outside linebacker from Washington, was selected by the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the 32nd and final selection of the first round on Thursday night. He was the lone player from the UW Huskies – or any Washington college team – picked on the opening day of the draft.

Tryon, an alum of Hazen High School in Renton, will join fellow UW Huskies product Vita Vea on the Buccaneers defense.

The 6-foot-5, 259-pound Tryon was a second-team All-Pac-12 selection as a sophomore with Washington in 2019. He made eight sacks and 41 total tackles, and he had a pass defended.

Tryon opted out of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season with the Huskies.

Washington has a few other players likely to be taken in the draft before it concludes Saturday: defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike, and cornerbacks Elijiah Molden and Keith Taylor.
