The Seahawks went into the NFL Draft with just three picks, and even with a couple of trades during the process, they’re coming out of it with exactly that many new players.

Seattle had to wait until the second day to make their first selection, taking Western Michigan wide receiver D’Wayne Eskridge in the second round at No. 56 overall, but while they stayed put with that pick, general manager John Schneider traded down early Saturday to get his team an extra selection. He then used that extra pick to move up in the sixth round on Saturday afternoon.

Here’s where things stand for the Seahawks after the draft.

Seahawks picks and trades

• First round

None – Trade with Jets for safety Jamal Adams

• Second round

No. 56 overall: D’Wayne Eskridge, WR, Western Michigan (Story | Instant Reaction)

Eskridge was a player our own Michael Bumpus advocated for the Seahawks to take in the draft. Read his full breakdown of Eskridge here.

• Third round

None – Trade with Jets for Adams

• Fourth round

No. 129 overall Traded to Tampa Bay for 137 overall (fourth round) and 217 (sixth round)

No. 137 overall (acquired from Tampa Bay): Tre Brown, CB, Oklahoma (story)

• Fifth round

None – Trade with Raiders for guard Gabe Jackson

Sixth round

No. 208 overall (acquired from Chicago): Stone Forsythe, OT, Florida (story)

Several NFL insiders are calling Forsythe, a giant at 6 foot 8, a great value pick for the Seahawks, with some having graded him as high as the second and third rounds. He’ll likely have time to learn the ropes with Seattle, which is set at tackle for this season with veterans Duane Brown and Brandon Shell.

No. 217 overall (acquired from Tampa Bay): Traded to Chicago

Seventh round

No. 250 overall: Traded to Chicago

Why so few picks for the Seahawks?

Safety Jamal Adams, a three-time All-Pro, cost the Seahawks their 2021 first- and third-round picks as well as next year’s first, though their trade with the Jets to get him did net Seattle an additional fourth-round selection in 2022.

The offensive line was a bit of a question mark entering the offseason, but Seattle was aggressive and acquired Gabe Jackson, a very well-regarded lineman who will play either left or right guard for the Seahawks in 2021.

Seattle also sent its original 2021 sixth-round pick to Miami during last year’s draft, which allowed the Seahawks to get back into the 2020 draft in the seventh round. The Seahawks used the pick on tight end Stephen Sullivan, who spent the season on the practice squad and is now with the Carolina Panthers.

Something else to note is that the Seahawks had an additional seventh-round pick, but they sent that to the Cincinnati Bengals last trade deadline for defensive end Carlos Dunlap.

Can the Seahawks get to eight picks?

The Seahawks have one of the longest-tenured general managers in the NFL in John Schneider, who came to Seattle in 2010.

Since Schneider joined the Seahawks, the team has made at least eight picks in each draft he’s conducted.

It’s unlikely Seattle can get to that mark yet again this year as the team entered the draft with just three picks, but Schneider is well known for trading back in the draft in order to acquire more mid- and late-round draft picks. The issue this year is that Schneider didn’t have what’s usually his best trade chip in a first-round pick due to the trade for Adams.

Seattle entered the 2019 draft in a similar position in terms of limited draft picks as they had five, and Schneider wound up making enough deals to boost that to 11 picks. The difference, though, is that Seattle had two first-round picks that year, using one to trade down and add more selections.

The second and third rounds are on Friday, beginning at 4 p.m.

And the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh rounds occur are on Saturday, kicking off at 9 a.m.
