Mariners center fielder Leonys Martin took part in a simulated game Wednesday at Safeco Field, another step in his recovery from the strained hamstring that has sidelined him for the past two weeks.
The video above, shot by Shannon Drayer, shows Martin taking some swings and then running the bases (here’s another video of Martin hitting). According to Drayer, Martin ran at what appeared to be 100 percent speed one time and held back a bit at others. He hit one ball to the right of the batters’ eye well beyond the center-field wall, drawing a reaction of approval and surprise from manager Scott Servais.
Martin said afterward that he felt good. Although Martin was late on a number of his swings, general manager Jerry Dipoto told Drayer that he was pleased with what he saw.
As of Tuesday, the Mariners’ plan was to send Martin on a rehab assignment Thursday as long as his simulated game went well. He’s eligible to rejoin the team Friday, by which point he would have spent the requisite 15 days on the disabled list.
Also of note: former Mariners farmhand Jarrett Grube was the pitcher who threw to Martin. According to Drayer, the Mariners are taking a look at the 34-year-old Grube, who was last in the organization in 2012 and has since pitched in the minors for the Angels’ and Indians’ affiliates. His lone major-league appearance since then came with the Angels in 2014, when he pitched in one game.
