DT Jarran Reed says he’s parting ways with Seahawks in tweet

The Seahawks added to their defensive line earlier this week, but they apparently won’t make through the week without also making a subtraction.

Defensive tackle Jarran Reed shared Thursday afternoon on his Twitter account that he and the Seahawks will be parting ways at 1 p.m. Friday.

Shortly after the Reeds news broke, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Seahawks are bringing back defensive end Carlos Dunlap on a two-year deal that suggests Seattle made a decision to go forward with Dunlap over Reed.

The question now is whether Reed will be released or traded. Schefter and Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network quickly followed Reed’s tweet with reports that either outcome could come and has yet to determined.

Reed, 28, is set to enter the final year of a two-year, $23 million contract he signed last offseason. With the NFL’s salary cap having shrunk from 2020 to 2021, it left players like Reed at risk of being cap casualties. Seattle previously released defensive end Carlos Dunlap for that reason.

According to Spotrac, Reed carries a $13.5 million cap hit for 2021, and Seattle has a potential out in the contract this offseason with a dead cap hit of $5 million.

The Seahawks selected Reed in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Alabama. He had a career-high 10.5 sacks in 2018 but struggled in 2019 after missing the first six games due to a suspension from the NFL. He rebounded strongly in 2020, making 6.5 sacks, 38 combined tackles, five tackles for loss and 14 quarterback hits. Other than the 2019 suspension, he has missed just two games in his career and none since 2017.

Seattle reportedly re-signed defensive end Benson Mayowa and added free-agent defensive end Kerry Hyder Jr. on Tuesday, and they worked out a contract extension with defensive tackle Poona Ford earlier this month. Hyder is one of several DEs on Seattle’s roster who can move inside to defensive tackle at times.
