The Mariners have placed Felix Hernandez on the 15-day DL with a strained right calf and called up James Paxton from Triple-A Tacoma to make the start for the Mariners Wednesday night in San Diego. The move is retroactive to May 28.
The injury is not believed to be serious. With Felix eligible to come off the DL June 12, he may not miss more than two starts.
Paxton was scratched from his start in Tacoma on Tuesday, and he joins the M’s after going 4-3 with a 3.97 ERA in 10 starts with Tacoma. Following a rocky spring and start to his season, he settled down and pitched well for the Rainiers, surrendering just 13 earned runs in his last 41 1/3 innings, with 11 of those runs coming in outings May 16 and May 21.
In Paxton’s last start for Tacoma, he pitched six innings, giving up just three hits and no earned runs.
This is Felix’s third trip to the DL in his career. In 2007 he missed a month with a strained right elbow and in 2008 he missed 18 days with a sprained left ankle.
We should learn more about the plan for Felix later in the day.
