The Seahawks’ offseason is getting noisy, and not in the usual way that has to do with transactions.

Russell Wilson’s comments created quite the stir this week as he took a more vocal approach than ever before to explain his concerns about the pass protection he receives and his desire to be involved more in the Seahawks’ decisions over players.

The thing that makes it all the more weird, as 710 ESPN Seattle’s Mike Salk pointed out, is how out of character it is – not for Wilson, but for Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll.

“One of the things Pete has done best in his decade here is defuse situations. I’ve never seen anyone better at it,” said Salk, co-host of the weekly Brock and Salk Podcast, during his daily segment with 710 ESPN Seattle’s Jake and Stacy.

Well, there sure hasn’t been any defusing this week. But if anyone is up to the task, Salk said it’s the person whose job it is to probably do so.

“Pete Carroll, this is now your time to be Pete Carroll,” Salk said. “… You might get frustrated by things (Carroll) does, but no one lowers the volume on controversy like Pete Carroll. And guess what? He’s going to have to do it here because trading Russell Wilson is a non-starter.”

Salk has seen firsthand just how adept Carroll is at handling situations like this, specifically after the Seahawks’ Super Bowl loss in February 2015. Brock and Salk was the morning show on 710 ESPN Seattle at that point and home to The Pete Carroll Show the day after each Seahawks game.

“The day after they lost the Super Bowl, there was Pete Carroll on our show in the morning, taking full responsibility for everything and lowering the volume,” he said. “Pete’s gotta lower the volume now, and I can’t think of anyone in football, maybe anybody in sports who’s better equipped to do that than Pete Carroll.”
