There is some good news with the Mariners despite Seattle losing 11 of its last 15 games and going 23 innings without scoring a run.

As Mariners broadcaster Mike Blowers discussed during his latest conversation with “Bob and Groz” on Tuesday, reliever Tom Wilhelmsen is having a fine season.

Blowers said Wilhelmsen has benefited from a change in approach more than anything, noting that he had the same ability when he made the team out of spring training last season.

Blowers: “At that time Tom still threw 97 miles an hour. Tom still had the great curveball. Tom just didn’t believe that what he had was good enough to get major-league hitters out, so he would fall behind, he would maybe walk more guys than he should. Here’s a 3-1 fastball at 96 miles an hour – major-league hitters will turn that around.

“And he had to go back down [to Triple-A]. And then when Tom came back, you kind of fall into this attitude … of ‘I have nothing to lose. I’m going to go out there and just let it rip, and whatever happens is going to happen.'”

Blowers went on to say that he thinks Wilhelmsen has the best curveball in the American League.

In the video below, Bob Stelton and Dave Grosby discuss Wilhelmsen’s strong season and whether he could be the Mariners’ All-Star representative.
