Mike Florio: NFL should have overturned Seahawks’ win

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com thinks officials should have overturned Golden Tate’s touchdown catch after reviewing the final play of Monday night’s Seahawks-Packers game.
Because they didn’t, Florio thinks NFL commissioner Roger Goodell should have stepped in.
“I think – and I know this is going to make me very popular in Seattle – I think the commissioner should have overturned the outcome of the game,” Florio told “Brock and Salk” on Thursday.

The NFL upheld the Seahawks’ 14-12 win, releasing a statement on Tuesday saying officials were correct to not overturn the call while conceding that they missed pass interference on Tate that, if called, would have given Green Bay a win.
Because penalties aren’t reviewable, the only issue for the NFL was whether there was indisputable evidence to overturn the call on the field. The league came to the same conclusion that officials did after they reviewed the play – there wasn’t.
Florio disagrees, citing the NFL rulebook’s definition of a simultaneous catch.
“The rule isn’t who has possession when you land on the ground,” Florio said. “The rule is who gets control of the ball first, and when one gets control of the ball before the other player, it doesn’t matter if they both have possession when they land on the ground.”
Florio said one angle showed Packers cornerback M.D. Jennings gaining control of the ball first. The reason the call wasn’t reversed, Florio said, was because the replacement officials working the game didn’t understand the rules for a simultaneous catch.
“That’s the problem with this NFL rulebook. It’s 200 pages thick, there’s so many nooks and crannies,” he said. “And I think the one thing we’ve learned from all this [is that] the regular officials have a pretty high degree of skill, a pretty deep knowledge of the rulebook and know how to apply these rules, for the most part, in real time.
“These guys on Monday night failed, and they should have overturned it.”
