Jason Churchill of Prospect Insider told “Bob and Groz” on Monday that the Mariners are “pretty heavy into some trade talks” with “a team or two” about acquiring a hitter. He suggested that the Mariners might not be making moves to acquire superstars, but described the potential returns as “proven, quality bats” that would be around beyond this season.
On Tuesday, Churchill wrote about the possibility of the Mariners trading for Justin Upton, who seems to fit the description of the type of player Churchill suggested they’re looking for. The 24-year-old outfielder is a .276 hitter in six MLB seasons, he’s coming off a season in which he hit a career-high 31 home runs and made his second All-Star appearance, and he’s under contract until 2015.
In Tuesday’s Wrap Up video, Mike Salk explains why he would have some hesitation if he were considering a trade for Upton.
