Pete Carroll: Sidney Rice appears OK after scary hit

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says receiver Sidney Rice “seems to be” OK after taking a hard hit to the head while scoring the game-winning touchdown against the Bears Sunday.

“He had a good time in the locker room, so he feels alright,” Carroll said with a laugh after the Seahawks’ 23-17 overtime win. “We’ll see.”

Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, citing a league source, reported that Rice was not diagnosed with a concussion.

The hit certainly looked scary. Rice’s helmet collided with the shoulder of Bears safety Major Wright just after crossing the goal line for the winning score. Rice stayed down while medical staff tended to him then walked off the field on his own power.

Rice indicated to reporters afterward that he was aware of what happened immediately after the hit and said the attention he was receiving from the medical staff was just a precaution.

“I’ve had a couple concussions before so they just wanted to make sure everything was fine,” he said.

Rice’s 2011 season ended prematurely after he sustained two concussions in a three-week span. His concussion history and the nature of the hit he took Sunday make his status worth monitoring this week.
