Trading Jason Vargas isn’t the Mariners’ only option

Jason Vargas allowed one hit and one run over eight innings on Thursday en route to his 11th win of the season, a new career high. In his last six starts, the Mariners’ left-hander has gone at least six innings while allowing no more than three runs.
While some assume the Mariners will trade Vargas while his value is at an all-time high, Larry Stone of The Seattle Times thinks it’s not a foregone conclusion.
“The Mariners face a tough decision here, because if you trade Vargas you’ve traded a lot of veteran pitchers over the last couple years, from [Doug] Fister and [Erik] Bedard … and Cliff Lee,” Stone told “Bob and Groz” on Friday.
“At some point you have to have some veterans there and not just turn it totally over to kids. I think it would be interesting to see if his people went to the Mariners about an extension, if they would be willing to listen. It sounds like he’s very motivated to stay here.”
