The Seattle Mariners announced Tuesday afternoon that the club has placed first baseman Mike Carp on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin muscle. First baseman Justin Smoak has been recalled from AAA Tacoma.
Smoak will be in uniform and available for Tuesday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Carp, 26, left Sunday’s game against the Angels after stretching for a throw in the 5th inning.
This is Carp’s third appearance on the disabled list this season. His previous two DL placements were due to right shoulder injuries.
Smoak returns to Seattle after being optioned to AAA Tacoma on July 25 in the midst of a 1-for-25 stretch that dropped his average with the Mariners to .189. He is still tied for the team lead in home runs (13), and is fourth on the club in RBI (38) in 90 games played.
