The year of 1992 was a long one for Seahawks fans, and even the few good things that happened didn’t seem to last very long. Take the case of Pete Gross.
Heaps: The two keys from the Seahawks’ best defensive game of season
Gross was the first voice of the Seahawks and a beloved figure in the Pacific Northwest. For four years he had heroically battled cancer, but by the fall of 1992 everyone could see that the end was near.
The Seahawks chose a Monday Night game – Nov. 30 – to put Pete in the Ring of Honor. The Seahawks were playing the division-leading Denver Broncos, but few held out hope as the team was mired in an eight-game losing streak. To have a chance they would need the Broncos to play to their level.
There was a chance, though. Seattle had been good on defense all year and Broncos quarterback John Elway would miss the game. Still, at 1-10 the Seahawks would need some luck.
The Seahawks hit the fourth quarter down 13-3. But after adding a field goal and with Gross on the call, Seattle mounted a furious last drive, and Stan Gelbaugh hit Brian Blades for a 3-yard TD as regulation expired and it was off to overtime.
Nothing came easy for these Seahawks, though, as John Kasay missed a 32-yard field goal on the second possession of overtime. Finally on the fourth possession of OT, Kasay nailed the game winner to the delight of the Hawks and their ailing play-by-play voice.
It was the last game Pete would ever call. He succumbed to cancer just two days later.
The Seahawks would lose out and wind up 2-14. But for one Monday night in November they got it done – for Pete’s sake.
