Seahawks Football 101: How the defense came up clutch against Vikings

Oct 13, 2020, 5:29 PM

The Seahawks are 5-0 and while the defense hasn’t been great to start the 2020 season, that unit has come up with a number of big plays to help Seattle stay undefeated. That was, once again, the case in a Week 5 victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

Moore’s 10 Seahawks Takeaways: Is Norton’s time as DC winding down?

Against the Vikings, the forced three turnovers, as well as a fourth-down stop late, that directly resulted in Seattle’s victory. That fourth-down-and-1 stop was one of three plays that former NFL linebacker Dave Wyman broke down in his latest weekly Football 1o1 videos.

Wyman, a host of 710 ESPN Seattle’s Bob, Dave and Moore, pointed out two key players on Seattle’s last defensive snap of the game: Defensive end Benson Mayowa and linebacker Cody Barton, who both played extremely physical in the former linebacker’s eyes.

Barton, starting in place of the injured Jordyn Brooks, came up and took out fullback C.J. Ham, who was the lead blocker for running back Alexander Mattison on the play. Mayowa, meanwhile, was able to plug up space and get the better of his blocker, so he and Barton filled Mattison’s running lane and allowed linebacker Bobby Wagner to make the tackle, giving the Seahawks’ offense the ball back before the eventual game-winning drive.

You can watch the full video at the top of this post or at this link to get the full breakdown of that play and others from Seattle’s Week 5 win. And for more Football 101 videos from this season, click any of the links below.
