Update Sept. 28, 11:02 a.m.: Seahawks coach Pete Carroll provided several updates on injuries suffered by Seahawks players in their Week 3 game when he joined 710 ESPN Seattle’s Danny and Gallant for his weekly Pete Carroll Show on Monday morning. Click here for that story.

Injuries continued to pile up across the NFL as Week 3 neared its conclusion, and entering the Seahawks’ showdown with the Cowboys, they were without three defensive starters and two role players. That list looks like it could be getting longer.

Starting linebacker Bruce Irvin and starting nickel cornerback Marquise Blair each had a torn ACL in a Week 2 Seattle win, and ahead of Seattle’s Week 3 win over the Cowboys, starting cornerback Quinton Dunbar was out with a knee injury, special teams captain and cornerback Neiko Thorpe was out with a hip injury and, surprisingly, backup safety Lano Hill was out with a hip/back injury that the team learned about on Sunday.

Now, other key starters on defense, the offensive line and in the backfield could miss time. Here’s what Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said of his team’s health after the game.

Key defenders leave with injuries

All-Pro safety Jamal Adams and first-round linebacker Jordyn Brooks, who was making his first NFL start, left the game and didn’t return to action.

Adams, arguably Seattle’s best defender, had an issue with his groin and appeared to pull himself out of the game. His status going forward is unclear.

“Jamal Adams has got a groin strain,” Carroll said. “Don’t know what’s going to happen to that. He’s pretty tight.”

Brooks’ issue was his knee. That proved to be a common theme for the Seahawks leaving Week 3.

“Jordyn Brooks had a knee sprain also earlier in the game. Guys rolled up on him,” Carroll said.

Offensive line

Only one starter on the offensive line, right tackle Brandon Shell, appears to be 100%. Carroll didn’t discuss left tackle Duane Brown, who is often limited or given the day off in practice for veteran rest and to help his knee, but the three other starters got hurt against the Cowboys, though only one left the game and didn’t return.

“Damien Lewis has an ankle sprain,” Carroll said. “X-rays were negative … I think it’s (called) a lateral ankle sprain.”

Left guard Mike Iupati left with “a knee situation” but returned and finished the game. Center Ethan Pocic has an injury that those watching the game likely noticed.

“Pocic had a knee issue that he finished the game with,” Carroll said. “I don’t know how he did that, but he did.”

Carson hurt again

Fourth-year running back Chris Carson has never played a full 16-game season and it looks like he could be in danger of that being the case again in 2020.

“Chris got his knee twisted at the end of a play,” Carroll said. “I don’t know about that, but he’s got a sprained knee to some extent.”

Carson hasn’t been asked to be a true “bell cow” this season like the last two years where he rushed for over 1,000 yards, but he’s remained a key part of the offense, catching three touchdowns in the first two games and taking 14 carries for 64 yards on Sunday. If he’s out, Carlos Hyde will likely carry the burden of the carries while second-year back Travis Homer and rookie DeeJay Dallas fill in.

Rashaad Penny, a 2018 first-round pick, is on the Physically Unable to Perform list after he tore his ACL last season during Week 14. Since he’s on PUP, that means he is out for at least the first six weeks of the year, and after that the Seahawks will have five weeks to get him practicing. Once Penny begins practicing, Seattle has three weeks to add him to the active roster. If he isn’t added to the roster, he will not eligible to play in 2020.

Other injury notes

As mentioned, the NFL and the Seahawks are bring hit hard by injuries to start 2020 and Carroll said the team is well aware of the issues guys are having.

“We did stuff all across the board anticipating that this is a big burden for them right now. It’s a big burden to be playing these football games,” he said. “… It seems like this is really a challenge for the players to make it through these first few weeks of the season.”

If players are placed on injured reserve for at least three weeks, that would open up spots on the roster. Carroll said general manager John Schneider is “working day and night to try and stay ahead of it.”
