Seattle has claimed right-handed pitcher Walker Lockett off waivers from the New York Mets, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.
Lockett, 26, was a fourth-round MLB Draft pick of the San Diego Padres in 2014 and has appeared in 15 games for the Padres and Mets over the past three seasons. Eight of those appearances were starts. The Jacksonville, Fla., native has a career 8.28 ERA and 1.818 WHIP in the big leagues, with 36 strikeouts to 18 walks in 45 2/3 innings.
The Mets designated Lockett for assignment following an Aug. 28 game in which he threw two scoreless innings of relief against the Yankees, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out three to earn the win. His other appearance this season was a start against the Phillies in which he took a no-decision after throwing six innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, two walks and a hit batsmen while striking out five.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Lockett began this season on the injured list with lower back discomfort.
With the Mariners, Lockett will be reunited with utility player Sam Haggerty, who he was traded with from Cleveland to the Mets ahead of the 2019 season. He was previously traded from San Diego to Cleveland in 2018.
In 114 games over eight minor league seasons, including stints nearby in the Northwest League with the Eugene Emeralds and Tri-City Dust Devils, Lockett logged 547 innings pitched, a 4.11 ERA, 1.307 WHIP, 418 strikeouts and 124 walks.
