There have been a lot of Seahawks transactions regarding defensive end Branden Jackson in the past month. The latest one is rather ominous.

Seahawks takeaways: What DC Ken Norton Jr. revealed about his defense

The Seahawks placed Jackson on injured reserve Sunday, just a little over a week after he was knocked unconscious during a mock game at CenturyLink Field. The mock game ended after his injury.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll provided further details during a video conference with members of the media, and they don’t sound good. Carroll said doctors have informed Jackson he should not play this season due to a spinal condition that have “possibly dangerous” long-term effects.

That sounds a lot like what resulted in the careers of former Seahawks Pro Bowlers Cliff Avril and Kam Chancellor ending, and Carroll acknowledged as much, though he specified Jackson’s condition is similar but not the same. Chancellor was found to have spinal stenosis after he suffered a stinger in a 2017 game, which proved to be his last. Also in 2017, Avril had surgery to repair a disc in his neck, at which point he had also played his last game.

Jackson was released by the Seahawks in late July but brought back just over a week later.

The 27-year-old Jackson has played four NFL seasons, the last three of which have been with Seattle. An undrafted free-agent signing of the Raiders’ in 2016, he joined Seattle’s practice squad in 2017.

Last season, Jackson had two sacks, three quarterback hits and 20 combined tackles in 15 games (three starts). He has 3.5 career sacks, all coming with the Seahawks.
