The Seahawks have made another addition to their defensive backs room, though it’s more of a move for the future than for immediate impact.

Seahawks Rapid Fire: 2020 breakout player, whether OL can improve

Safety/cornerback D.J. Reed was claimed off waivers from the 49ers by the Seahawks on Wednesday. Reed is on the non-football injury list – and will remain so after being acquired by the Seahawks – due to a torn pectoral muscle he suffered while working out earlier this summer. His injury puts his availability for any point in 2020 in question, though 49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters Reed may be able to return in November.

The 49ers waived Reed with a non-football injury designation Tuesday.

Reed fits the mold of a type of player the Seahawks usually have at least one of on their roster at a time as somebody who could be used in every position in the secondary – safety, cornerback, or nickel cornerback. He also has experience returning kicks for San Francisco.

A fifth-round NFL Draft selection of the 49ers in 2018 out of Kansas State, he has appeared in 31 games with two starts in his two years pro with San Francisco. In his career, Reed has two passes defensed, a sack, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery (returned for a touchdown), 54 combined tackles and three tackles for loss.

Reed is listed at 5 foot 9 and 188 pounds.

Previously the Seahawks made another addition to their secondary with the blockbuster trade for All-Pro safety Jamal Adams.
