Seahawks notebook: Percy Harvin’s status uncertain

RENTON – Percy Harvin’s status is a question mark as Seattle enters its week of preparation.

That’s a familiar refrain for the receiver, who played only his second game as a Seahawk on Saturday against New Orleans.

The difference is that it’s not his hip, but a head injury. Harvin left Saturday’s game with a concussion he suffered with less than 2 minutes remaining in the second quarter when he was hit hard for the second time in the game.

Coach Pete Carroll had no update on his status during his press conference on Monday.

“We’ll wait through the week here and see what happens,” Carroll said. “Wednesday, Thursday will be the important days to see what’s going on.”

Two things that are worth noting: It’s Harvin’s head that is the cause of the uncertainty, not his hip. That’s not to diminish the significance of the head injury only to point out that Carroll said that Harvin’s surgically repaired hip is not inordinately sore after he played his second game.

“He came out very well,” Carroll said. “We’re way ahead of the game on that one.”

The fact Seattle played on Saturday translates to an extra day of recovery before the Seahawks play in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday.

Harvin must follow the league protocol for returning from a concussion, which requires not only that all concussion symptoms disappear before he can begin working out, but the workouts will be limited initially while the player is monitored to make sure the symptoms don’t return.

“We’re going to take of Percy and make sure we do the right thing,” Carroll said. “We’re not going to stretch the limits on this at all. We’ve got to be very careful here and we’ll do that every step of the way.”

If Harvin can return, though, his first half on Saturday demonstrated the kind of impact he can have on Seattle’s offense.

“He caught three balls and he could have had five,” Carroll said. “A couple of big opportunities. It was just unfortunate that he got out there and got hammered a couple of times.”

Wright ready?

Linebacker K.J. Wright suffered what could have been a season-ending injury on Dec. 8 in San Francisco when he was diagnosed with a broken bone in his foot.

Not with the way Wright recovered, though. He ran last week, testing out the injury, and he worked out again for the team Monday. He has a chance to return for this game against San Francisco.

“He’ll get a rest day tomorrow,” Carroll said, “and he’ll come back on Wednesday and we’ll see where he is. He has a chance. We’re excited about that for him.”
