The Seattle Mariners selected New Mexico third baseman DJ Peterson with the 12th overall pick in the 2013 MLB First Year Player Draft.

Peterson was considered one of the best hitters in all of college baseball last season, posting a .408 average with 18 HR and 72 RBI.

There are some concerns about his ability to play third base, and a position change to first base may be necessary long-term.

Industry experts say Peterson is a safer bet to hit for average, not power, in the big leagues.

Peterson was selected previously by the Mariners in the 33rd round of the 2010 Draft, but he opted to play college baseball at New Mexico instead of sign with Seattle.

The Mariners next selection is at pick 49.
