In what is probably the least surprising transfer story of the week, the Sounders officially signed former United States international forward Herculez Gomez on Thursday.

Gomez had been training with the Sounders for much of last week, but the club didn’t comment on it at the time. Sigi Schmid told reporters on Tuesday that there would be a decision regarding Gomez this week.

The 33-year-old striker has played for a number of clubs in Mexico and the United States in his career, including the L.A. Galaxy, Tijuana, and even a loan stint with the Sounders in 2003 before the club had joined MLS. Gomez has 24 caps for the United States national team and scored six goals for his country, including two in 2014 World Cup qualifying matches.

Gomez was recently released by Toronto FC, for which he made seven appearances and scored a single goal in 2015. Expect Gomez to be looked at chiefly as an off-the-bench goal threat, much like Chad Barrett and Kenny Cooper were for the Sounders in the past.
