Franklin Gutierrez will be back in a Mariners uniform for the first time in two months tonight.
The Mariners recalled the veteran center fielder Saturday from a rehab stint with Triple-A Tacoma, where he was working out a strained hamstring he suffered on April 22.
Gutierrez, who played 22 games for the Rainiers on rehab assignment, hit .259 with four home runs and 10 RBI in 16 games for the Mariners before his injury.
The Mariners created a spot for Gutierrez on the roster by placing fellow outfielder Michael Morse on the 15-day disabled list. Morse has played sparingly in recent weeks due to a nagging right quad injury he suffered vs. San Diego on May 28. He is hitting .251 with 11 home runs and 23 RBI in 56 games.
Finally, the Mariners designated Triple-A outfielder Eric Thames for assignment. Thames was acquired last season from the Toronto Blue Jays, but is currently on the DL with a left wrist laceration. The franchise now has 10 days to trade, release or outright Thames’ contract.
