After releasing two rotation hopefuls earlier this week, the Mariners have signed 34-year-old right-hander Chris Young to a major-league contract.

The club announced the addition Thursday, designating reliever Bobby LaFromboise for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Young will be in uniform for Friday’s game against Colorado.

After spending last season in the Nationals’ minor-league system following shoulder surgery, Young had been in camp with Washington as a non-roster invitee. He’s a nine-year MLB veteran with a 53-43 record in 159 career starts and a one-time All-Star, and no scouting report of Young would be complete without mentioning that at 6-foot-10 he is the second-tallest player in MLB history.

Young’s addition comes after first Scott Baker and then Randy Wolf asked for and were granted their releases from the club. Each was a candidate to start the season in the Mariners’ rotation.
