RENTON – It wasn’t perfect, according to Seahawks offensive-line coach Tom Cable, but rookie Mark Glowinski’s first career start was plenty impressive.
“Very. Very,” Cable said when asked if he was encouraged by the way Glowinski played Sunday against Arizona. “He handled everything the right way. He didn’t make it too big, prepared himself the right way and just played really hard.”
Glowinski, a fourth-round pick, had played all of one offensive snap this season before Sunday, when a concussion sidelined starting right guard J.R. Sweezy. Coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Glowinski showed that he “can play for us,” which was previously unknown considering Glowinski’s only real playing time had come on special teams.
Cable said Glowinski “did a really good job” in pass-protection and noted he had some issues blocking on the strong-side of running plays, “so we’re kind of working on that this week in case he’s got to go again.”
Sweezy was limited in Wednesday’s practice, but Carroll said that he’s optimistic that he and a handful of other previously injured players will be able to return for Sunday’s wild-card game against Minnesota.
Cable was asked what Seattle learned about Glowinski from his first career start.
“Kinda what we’ve been seeing in practice, really,” he said. “You see a tough competitor. He’s going to try and do exactly what you ask him to do. Had some issues, which are normal for a first time out like that. But overall you have to be really, really happy and excited for him.”
Cable said Alvin Bailey played better Sunday than he did the week before while making his second straight start at left tackle.
Here’s a bit more of what Cable said during his media availability Wednesday:
• Asked how running back Marshawn Lynch has looked in his return to the team this week, Cable said: “He’s been fantastic. Exactly what we said. He’s adapted very well. I think he’s done a great job of recognizing where this team is at and their vibe and he’s come right in and went to work and it’s been really good.
• Cable said “discipline” is the biggest difference he’s seen in running back Christine Michael during his second stint with the team. “I think he’s really tried to capture his opportunity. I’m really proud of him that he saw what it is, and he’s kinda been around here and there and kicked around and then he came back, and he’s really tried to be what we’ve always asked him to be. So I’m really happy for him.” Here’s more on what Michael has shown the Seahawks in his return.
