The Seahawks hoped cornerback Tharold Simon would take a significant step forward in his third NFL season after injuries and inconsistency plagued his first two.
They’ll have to wait even longer for Simon’s breakthrough as the team placed him on season-ending injured reserve Saturday because of lingering issues with a previously dislocated toe. The Seahawks promoted rookie running back Rod Smith to take Simon’s place on the active roster, giving them a temporary reinforcement for Sunday’s game against Cincinnati.
Simon, a fifth-round pick in 2013, didn’t play a single snap as a rookie because of injuries to both of this feet. He showed promise during the 2014 offseason but missed the start of the regular season with a knee injury and the end of it due to a dislocated shoulder that required offseason surgery. Simon returned for the playoffs, where he was picked on and picked apart first in the divisional round against Carolina and then in the Super Bowl against New England.
Add it all up and Simon has been injured far more than he’s been effective during the start to his NFL career.
Smith, meanwhile, is an undrafted rookie from Ohio State. His promotion gives Seattle another healthy body behind Thomas Rawls, who’s in line to make his second straight start in place of an injured Marshawn Lynch. Veteran Fred Jackson isn’t certain to play either as he’s coming off a high ankle sprain and listed as questionable.
