Dee Gordon was expected to be one of the top Mariners trade pieces before the July 31 MLB trade deadline, but a wrench has been throw into the equation.

The Mariners second baseman has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained quadriceps muscle. Not only won’t Gordon be eligible to come off the IL until two days after the trade deadline, but it appears he will need more time than 10 days to recover.

To take Gordon’s place on the active roster, the Mariners have selected infielder Tim Lopes from Triple-A Tacoma. The 25-year-old Lopes will make his MLB debut in his first appearance with the Mariners.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Lopes, Seattle designated relief pitcher Parker Markel for assignment.

Gordon, 31, left Monday night’s Mariners win over the Rangers after the second inning due to the injury. He is hitting .280 with 16 stolen bases this season. This is his second trip to the IL in 2019.

Lopes is hitting .302 with 10 home runs, 30 doubles, two triples, 60 RBIs, 24 stolen bases and an .843 OPS in 91 games in Triple-A. A 2012 sixth-round MLB Draft pick by the Mariners, he returned to Seattle as a minor league free agent last November after two seasons in the Toronto farm system.

Markel, 28, has a 15.43 ERA in five appearances over two stints with the Mariners this year.
