The Seahawks kick off training camp on July 25, and until then, Brock Huard and Mike Salk will count down the top 25 most intriguing Seahawks every weekday at 8:30 a.m. Their list starts with rookie guard Phil Haynes.

Seahawks who can have most impact with breakout season

Quick look

• Drafted by the Seahawks in the fourth-round of this year’s NFL Draft (more here)
• 6-foot-4, 322-pounds.
• Has experience playing at both guard and tackle.
• Started 47 career games over four seasons with Wake Forest.

What Brock Huard says…

“Boy Howdy didn’t want this guy on the list, by Mike Salk and I do, and I love this. In fact, I think you could move him up from number 25. And over the course of the season he may (become more intriguing), or he may be inactive for weeks one through 16 because guys actually stay healthy. Phil Haynes and linebacker Cody Barton were the two rookies who I think opened the most eyes this offseason. There’s no question DK Metcalf dominated rookie minicamp and closed out the veteran minicamp very, very well. But as far as Phil Haynes, he was starting when Mike Iupati and D.J. Fluker were out – and that’s when you’ve got Marcus Martin, Jordan Simmons, Ethan Pocic, guys who have started games in this league, available. Instead, it’s this fourth-round pick who gets a look; a guy who even in the fourth round the draft evaluation guys thought you probably could’ve got him in the fifth or sixth rounds.”

Why is he on this list?

“First of all, he may spell the end for Ethan Pocic,” co-host Mike Salk said. “Ethan Pocic was a second-round pick, but of a previous offensive line coach and a previous offensive coordinator… and when you see this group together, he does not fit. Those guys are huge, and Phil Haynes is right there in the middle of it, he fits the profile a lot better. The other part is that their guards keep getting hurt, (and if one of them is out) maybe you’re going to see Jordan Simmons, or maybe it’s going to end up being Phil Haynes. And for a team that is explicitly concerned about running the football, and had as much success doing that last year as anybody, I would say Phil Haynes is going to be awfully important and awfully intriguing.”

What teammates are saying…

“Phil Haynes is someone that definitely has been a pleasant surprise,” left tackle Duane Brown said during OTAs. “He’s a big, strong guy and he’s catching on pretty quickly. He has a great demeanor. A lot of times this kind of atmosphere can be overwhelming — being given so much information, the speed right now, you’re not used to practicing without pads on so fast, and everything’s happening so quickly. But he’s handling everything well.”
