New York – With the exception of the hand injury to Kyle Seager, Mariners position players have managed to escape major injury this season. It looks like that streak has come to an end.

In the third inning of the Mariners’ series-ending game against the Yankees, second baseman Dee Gordon was hit on the right wrist by a 90 mph fastball thrown by J.A. Happ. Gordon immediately dropped his bat and skipped behind home plate in obvious pain as manager Scott Servais and a trainer jogged from the dugout to check on him. After a quick look by the trainer, Gordon was escorted off the field and down the tunnel to the training room.
Dylan Moore was brought in to replace Gordon in the game.
While there has been no official word on Gordon’s status as of yet, he looked like a player who knew he had been injured. And if he is, the Mariners have just lost one of their most valuable players. In addition to batting .304 and driving in 19 runs this season, Gordon has been a steadying force in an infield that has a third baseman that has played mainly first base in his career and a first baseman who had prepared for a season at DH.
General manager Jerry Dipoto will have options in replacing Gordon if he is to be out for the short- or long-term. Shortstop J.P. Crawford and utility player Shed Long are both on the 40-man roster, and each has put up strong numbers at the plate for Triple-A Tacoma. If Crawford is brought up, Tim Beckham could shift to second base.
We will update this post as we receive more news on Gordon’s status.
