Mariners’ bats steal the show in home-opening win over champion Red Sox

Maybe we had these Mariners all wrong.

In their second Opening Day in a week and with ESPN’s top broadcast crew in town to call the first game of the 2019 season for the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox, the Mariners stole the show. To be more exact, it was their bats that did the stealing.
Look at what an M’s team supposedly taking a step back did against a Boston squad that started Chris Sale, an All-Star for seven years running.
• New shortstop Tim Beckham hit a pair of mammoth home runs, something that combined with what he did in last week’s two-game sweep of the Oakland A’s in Japan makes him clearly the hottest hitter in baseball right now. As it stands, he leads the league with three homers in three games.

• Domingo Santana crushed a rainbow of a homer into the Mariners’ bullpen, already his second in a Mariners uniform.
• Edwin Encarnación, a pretty low-key offseason addition for somebody who has hit 30 or more homers for seven straight seasons, scorched a laser of a homer for his first with the M’s.
• Ryon Healy got in on the action with his second shot of the year.
• The Mariners as a team scored 12 runs on 12 hits, with Mitch Haniger, Santana, Encarnación and Beckham all having multi-hit days, and only first baseman Jay Bruce and catcher David Freitas coming up hitless among Seattle’s starters.
On the mound, Marco Gonzales improved to 2-0 after outdueling Sale. The Mariners’ 27-year-old lefty allowed four runs (three earned) over 5 1/3 innings, striking out four and allowing nine hits and a walk.
Reliever Cory Gearrin threw a scoreless inning, and Brandon Brennan finished the game up with a pair of scoreless frames.
