The UW Huskies have secured their two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year for six more seasons.

Hopkins says UW Huskies can’t let offense affect defense in tourney

Washington men’s basketball head coach Mike Hopkins agreed to a new six-year contract, the university confirmed Thursday. The news, which was first reported by Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel, comes just one day before Washington will make its first return to the NCAA men’s basketball championship in nearly a decade.

“I couldn’t be happier to be at the University of Washington and am so thankful for the leadership we have under both President Ana Mari Cauce and Athletic Director Jen Cohen,” Hopkins said in a statement. “I’ve always said ‘people, place and potential’ matter and Washington is exactly where I want to be. Our program is surrounded by great people and we’ve made some great strides in our first two years here. I’m very excited for the future of Husky basketball and am grateful for the support of the University and our awesome Husky fans.”

710 ESPN Seattle’s Brock Huard said the signing is great news for Washington’s basketball program.

“When Hopkins joined us last week and talked about all the individual accolades, including his own – he was two-time coach of the year in the conference,” Huard said. “You have the defensive player of the year for Matisse Thybulle, and the conference player of the year for Jaylen Nowell. When you win, everybody wins; everybody gets their individual accolades. And ultimately Mike Hopkins get a pivotal, six-year extension that (UW Director of Athletics) Jen Cohen is able to get inked and done. And I think that’s a big deal, as everyone is going to come calling for his services.”

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
