The Mariners have acquired outfielder Chris Denorfia from the Padres in exchange for outfielder Abraham Almonte and minor-league pitcher Stephen Kohlscheen.
The club made the announcement Thursday morning, about 90 minutes before MLB’s trade deadline.
Denorfia, 34, is a right-handed hitter. He has hit .242 with one home run and 16 RBIs in 89 games for San Diego this season. He’s a .275 hitter in nine big-league seasons.
Almonte, 25, began the season as the Mariners starting center fielder and leadoff hitter but was sent down to Triple-A Tacoma after hitting just .198 in 27 games.
Kohlscheen, a 25-year-old right-hander, has split time between Double-A Jackson and Tacoma this season.
